If you are not currently receiving SSA Social Security Benefits, you will need to sign up for Medicare at http://www.ssa.gov/ or phone 800-772-1213
You can sign up three months before age 65, but benefits will begin on the 1st of the month you turn 65.
We want to make sure you are aware of two very important actions you need to take before your 65th birthday.
1. Create a Health Savings Account HSA, that allows you to pay medical expenses with pre-tax dollars. You MUST establish your account BEFORE turning age 65. If you wait until your birthday, it is too late!
2. Know your Medicare Supplement Guaranteed Issue options. A Medicare Supplement , MediGap, plan will pay the 20% not paid by Original Medicare. Persons turning age 65 new to Medicare are entitled to "Guaranteed Issue", which means the insurance company MUST issue you a policy regareless of your "Pre-Existing Conditions".
Go to www.irs.gov and download Publication 969 and Form 8889 for details.
